Brief History of Ranikhet :-

Ranikhet gets its name from Local legend which means Queen’s Meadow. King Sudhardev’s wife choosen this ara to be her residence, hence name Ranikhet came into existence.
In 1869 it was British period and they have established headquarters of their army at this place as summers retreat. It had importance of summer headquarters as Shimla was the summer headquarters during that period. Ranikhet also remained under Nepalese rule for some period of time but later on local General KashiNathAdhikari won it back, during British period number of educational institution came up at this place.Ranikhetis now a cantonment area of Kumaon and Naga Regiment also have military hospital. Dronagiri: Dronagiri is located some 52 kms away from Ranikhet , There is old temple of mythological importance.

Pandavkholi: Nearby Dronagiri is Pandavkholi, Pandvas of Mahabharat epic stayed at this place, a beautiful spectacular view of Himalayan mountain can be viewed from here.

Bageshwar: Bageshwar is located 107kms from Ranikhetis known temple of Bageshwar dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is located at the confluence of Gomti and Saryu river.
It is also a base camp of number of treks starting from Bageshwar.

Baijnath: 90 Kms from Ranikhet is the temple of Baijnath at the bank of Gomti and Garuda river.

Jageshwar: Jageshwar 80 kms from Ranikhet is the famous cluster of 128 temples the prominent of them being one of the jyotirlingJageshwar and the Mahamrityunjay temple which is the only temple of this incarnation of Lord Shiva in the world .

Dwarahat: 37 Kms from Ranikhet is Dwarhat was once the Capital of Katyuri Rulers. Dwarhat is famous for a festival held here in the month of April every year.

Nainital:59 Kms from Ranikhet is the beautiful hill station of Nainital also known as lake district. The other lakes around Nainital are Bhimtal, sat tal, khuupatal, sattal and Naukhuchiatal.

Almora: 46 kms from Ranikhet is Alomora the other important and must visit destination known for panoramic view of Himalayas it is also famous for handicraft local cuisines.

Kausani: 76 Kms from Ranikhet is home of famous Hindi Poet SumitraNandan Pant. It is popular and less crowded hill station.
