About Mussoorie

Situated at an altitude of about 2,500 mts. above sea level, Mussoorie is popularly known as the queen of the hills. It provides some of the most breathtaking views of Himalayan ranges and Panoramic view of Doon Valley. Nature has gifted it astounding beauty and luster which make it a favourite destination for tourists. Some of the tourist spots in Mussoorie are Lal Tibba, Gun Hill, Municipal Gardens and Kempty Falls. Mussoorie is located about 35 km from Dehradun present day state capital and 290 kms from National Capital New Delhi. The other adjoining places are Landour, Barlowgunj and Jharipani. Mussoorie is located at the height of 1880 from sea level is among popular hill stations in North India can be approached from Deharadun and Saharanpur while driving from Delhi and connected by trains till Deharadun. Brief History of Mussoorie :-

The name Mussoorie originallycame from a local shrub called as Mansoor. In 1827 British Army officer named young explored this place and laid the foundation of Mussoorie as summer hill resort. In 1832 Col Averest surveyor General of India at that time opened up an office in Mussoorie, later on other the other prominent Amir of Afganistan detained in Mussoorie for summer and winter in Deharadun. During British rule in India it remained the summer residence of Royal highness the duke and Dutches. The development of Mussoorie taken place once the rail link established till Deharadun. During 1959 the 14th Dalai Lama the monk in exile first came to Mussoorie before settling to Dharamshala Himachal Pradesh before making it the permanent place to stay. Even today some Tibetan population still resides in Mussoorie.

By Air: Jolly Grant which is 24 kms is the nearest airport to reach Mussoorie. There are regular flights from New Delhi.

Rail: Nearest Railway station is Dehradun, Connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Howrah, Varanasi, Haridwar and other parts of India. Taxis are available from Dehradun Railway station to Mussoorie.

Road: Connected by road from Delhi and other parts of North India.
