About Almora

Almora is called a cultural hub of Kumaon region also a place known for local cuisine. It is located on the southern part of Kumaon hills surrounded by pine and fir forests snow caped mountain can be seen from here, a visit without Almora is incomplete in Kumaon region.

Brief History of Almora

The Town of Almora actually named after a grass called Kilmora or Almori. The Katyuri and Chand rulers have their role in history of Almora. The Chand ruler founded this town in 1568. It was also called as Rajapur as Chand ruler Kalyan Chand the founder of Almora named it Rajapur. Noted Dancer Udai Shankar has established a dance academy near Almora and number of dancers trained from the academy. Swami Vivekanand had spent quite some time at this place and done meditation here. Mahatama Gandhi the father of nation also visited Almora and praised the beauty and climate of Almora Town.

Gananath:The famous Shiva Temple located 47kms from Almora, also there are caves nearby in ancient times devotees used caves as shelter to stay in while there pilgrimage to Gananath Temple.

Someshwar: 35 kms from Almora is the temple of Someshwar counstructed by Chand rulers. The temple have great importance for locals.

Kausani: 47 Kms form Almora is beautifull hill station of Kausani. Sumitra Nandan Pant the noted Hindi Poet was born here. Mahatma Gandhi also visited this place and praised the beauty of this place. It’s calm and beautiful ideal place for peace and away from hustle and bustle of the cities.

Binsar:31 kms from Almora is Binsar, a famous temple dedicated to lord Shiva is at the elevation of 2415 from sea level is famous among local devotees and visited by thousands every year. The temple was constructed by ruler of Chand Dynasty. Number of high peaks can be viewed form here.

Jageshwar: 35 Kms from Almora is temple of Jageshwar one among jyotirlinga temples is the 08th dwadash Jyotirlinga dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the famous and must visit destination while on your tour to Jageshwar.

Ranikhet:Known for its natural beauty and spectacular cool climes. Also the headquarter of Kumaon and Naga regiment. Golf course is nearby from Ranikhet.
